Give Camp to Kids Stories

Inspiring Curiosity, Kindness and Confidence

Your donation helps us light the spark of curiosity, confidence and kindness for disadvantaged kids. Take Lahni, a 1st grader from Oakland. Three weeks at Camp Edmo on a partial scholarship made her passionate about ant’s anatomy, the engineering of castles, and dissecting owl pellets. She would never have considered biology a career possibility before the wonder she experienced at Camp Edmo. In her grandma’s words, “Camp Edmo nurtures children’s inquisitiveness and creativity, and it’s all done with such wonderful enthusiasm!” For James, a 5th grader from the Canal District, after a week at Camp EdTech on full scholarship he got so enthused about creating media that he “became more interested in school and put effort into studying” when fall rolled around. Instead of watching TV at home, he was making TV at camp. When visiting Camp Edmo, a donor was shocked to see a young boy, labeled a “lost cause” by his teachers, spontaneously shout out, “I LOVE science!” in the midst of his Ice Cream Baggie experiment. At Edventure More, we tap into the innate curiosity in the heart of every child. When you donate to Give Camp to Kids, you support… … Edmobile Winter Camp, bringing urban youth to the Bay Area’s wild outdoors.
2009’s Year of Science is going out with a big, green bang this Winter Break. Thirty lucky kids will be hopping on a solar-powered, bio-diesel Eco Bus to explore the Bay Area’s top natural science centers Dec. 21 – 24. Edmobile, a nonprofit winter camp, is partnering with the who’s-who of environmental education to ensure children know the wonders in their own back yards. Exploratorium, Lawrence Hall of Science, Aquarium of the Bay, Tilden Regional Parks and the newly opened Marine Mammal Center are all slated to give hands-on natural science education to 40 2nd – 5th graders from San Francisco. Whether it’s diving into pollution’s effect on marine mammals or unearthing the secrets of winter hibernation, San Francisco kids are keeping the wheels turning this winter. – KQED release, Nov. 2010
