Entering 2nd – 4th Grade

Earth science, physical science, fine arts, outdoor recreation, technology, nature…we’ve got it all! Our award-winning camps feature projects designed and tested by Edventure More in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences, Children’s Creativity Museum and the Museum of Children’s Art. Entering 2nd-4th grade campers keep their mind & bodies active while rocking “The Edmo Vibe” of curiosity, confidence and kindness all summer long. Click each tab below to learn more.

What We Recommend: With so many great choices, it’s hard to decide what not to do! We’re fans of balance. Try to find at least 2 Arts & Science weeks and 2 Animation weeks that excite your child. Then add Edmo in the Park in late July/August to round out a perfect summer.

Voted Bay Area’s “Best Summer Day Camp” and “Best Educational Support Program”– 2009, 2010, 2011 BayAreaParent Magazine

Our Arts & Science program is built around four kid-friendly weekly themes. Every day campers rotate through one-hour stations of Art, Science, Outdoor Recreation and Team Time that relate to the theme. We personally test each activity for maximum “Wow Factor.” If we don’t get tickled pink doing it, you won’t see it at camp.

Our projects are fantastic, but it’s our highly trained and well-costumed staff that bring them to life. These college-graduate Instructors & college student Counselors have a contagious enthusiasm for learning. Talk about something you don’t mind your kids catching! Kids learn you don’t need to wear a lab coat to be a scientist. You don’t have to live in a tiny studio in France to be an artist. Art and science are all around us, and with a little imagination and a dash of silliness, learning suddenly feels a whole lot like playing.

My daughter came home wildly excited about her projects…from making soda, art and camp songs, to making new friends. Thank you so much for making her experience one she’ll remember for a lifetime!” -Cheryl Morand, 2011 Larkspur Parent

2012 Arts & Science Weekly Themes

More Gizmos & Game Inventors

Inventors, tinkerers and creative thinkers wanted! Enter a world where your imagination transforms every day objects into quirky machines, mind-bending puzzles, mini-pet robots, original board games and one-of-a-kind creations!

Sample Art Projects:

Marble Maze: Wander through the history of labyrinths, from Ancient Egypt to the maze at Knossos which housed the infamous Minotaur in Ancient Greece. Use your knowledge to design and create your very own working marble maze, complete with trap doors, false walls and secret passages!

Board Games: Discover the evolution of games, from prehistoric game pieces made from rocks and bones to today’s most popular versions made from sanitary plastic and cardboard. Learn the process of board game creation then invent your own. Make your own board, pieces, cards, spinners, dice…and best of all…your own rules. We promise you’ll never get bored of these board games!

Sample Science Projects:

Grip-n-Slide Game: Mix a playing board, a maze, magnets and pinch of creativity, and what you get is the world’s first ever “Grip-n-Slide” game. Use the magnetic forces of repel and attract to create an Edmo original game that you can play two ways: right side up or upside down!

Jitterbots: Get a charge when you put together a small motor, a battery, some wires and an empty margarine tub. Create an electrical circuit to power your own remote control pet robot that shakes, rattles and even draws messy pictures!

Peeking Periscopes: Bend light, create reflections and make hide-and-go-seek just a little more fun. Build your own periscopes so you can look around corners, peer over tables and know if someone is sneaking up behind you!

More Animal Survival

Do you know what it takes to survive in the wild? Imagine what it’s like as you discover the strangest things some animals must do to eat, grow up, build homes, communicate, avoid predators and survive natural disasters!

Sample Art Projects:

Survival Island: Ever dreamed of living on an island? What would you need to survive? What would it look like? Who or what else would live there? Enhance your survival skills by creating your own three-dimensional habitat, topography, foliage, and creatures on your own private island!

Honeycomb Home: Most people try to stay pretty far away from beehives. Usually that’s a good idea, but not if you want to learn what it’s like inside! Turns out it takes a lot of cooperation to live in a bee colony. In this art project, you’ll do like a bee and create your own section of honeycomb and add bee buddies to play unique and important roles in your hive’s survival.

Beaver Box Puppet: Beaver Zero, Beaver One, let’s all have some Beaver Fun! If you hadn’t heard already, beavers are one of the most underrated animals on the planet. Not at Camp Edmo though! Learn about this incredible mammal and create a beaver buddy to take home.

Sample Science Projects:

Going to Galapagos: The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the strangest looking animals on Earth. How did they get there? What are the challenges they faced once on the island? We’ll play a game where you get to be the animals and it’s your job to survive!

Bee Boogie: What if the only way you could give directions was to shake your body? What if you lived in a house with thousands of your friends and family…and there was only one door in and out? See what it feels like to be a honey bee in a hive and try to tell your friends where the best flowers are…just by shaking your tail!

More Fantastic Flyers

Get ready…it’s time to get UP! You’ll be flying high as we launch rockets, fly kites, float giant bubbles, build hot air balloons, toss boomerangs, spin mini-copters and design strange new contraptions that soar through the air!

Sample Art Projects:

Surreal Sky Collage: Look up in the sky…it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a pig? Learn about the surrealist movement through the eyes of Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst and Frieda Kahlo. Use your wildest imagination to design a dream-like skyscape using watercolor, collage, and decoupage.

Kite Flight: We’re huge fans of kites…in fact, there’s one in our camp logo! We’ll uncover mysterious legends about the origin of the kite (it really is a mystery) then test your creative design skills as you build, decorate, and fly your very own kite. The sky’s the limit! Nothing says science, art and outdoor fun like a kite…if it could talk of course.

Sample Science Projects:

Stomp Rockets: This is one of our favorite projects featuring materials you might find in your kitchen or garage. We’ll combine principles of simple machines and air pressure to design a launcher and build rockets that can launch over 100ft in the air! You’ll never look at a 2-liter soda bottle the same way again.

Giant Bubbles: These are not your grandpa’s bubbles. Our mind-blowing solution has a surface tension so strong you can practically stand inside one of these giant bubbles! Invent your own bubble blower to maximize the size and shape of your enormous luminescent orbs.

Hovercrafts: Assemble a stylish spaceship that slips seamlessly over smooth surfaces. (Try saying that 10 times). A homemade inflatable lift engine will pressurize the air underneath your vessel to get it off the ground. Without the force of friction underneath, your ship will really sail across a room!

More Earth Explorers

Discover curious creatures, magical habitats, and unique cultures that can be found on this magnificent planet! You’ll swing through the layers of the Amazon rainforest, ride the backs of antelopes through the Africa savanna, and play instruments invented 1,500 years ago by indigenous Australians.

Sample Art Projects:

The Path: Connect the dots of ancient cosmology and the koori (aboriginal) people of Australia by painting a story using their signature technique of dot painting.

Didgeridoo: Just saying the name of this 1,500 year-old wind instrument is a good time! How much fun is it going be to build, paint and play your very own didgeridoo? Our guess…more fun than you’ll know what to didgeridoo with.

Kangaroo Pouches: Now that you’ve gotten to know this cute member of the marsupial family, learn basic sewing techniques to build your own kangaroo pouch. It even comes complete with a baby joey (that’s what the babies are called). You didn’t think we’d let you get through the week without your own pouch, did you?

Sample Science Projects:

Jungle Vision: To untrained eyes, the jungle looks like one big tangle of trees, leaves and bushes. Learn about the layers of the jungle, from the canopy to the forest floor to the bedrock beneath it, as well as the types of animals that live in each. Guess where the monkeys live!

Rainforest Discovery: With about 50% of all known plants and animals species living in rainforests, there’s a lot of ground…and water…to cover. Find out where in the world these magical forests flourish, why they have such biodiversity and why they must be protected!

In our Animation program, entering 2nd-4th graders turn their imaginations into animations. Animators invent silly characters, strange plots and funny scripts. They build their actors, sets and add voice overs and sounds effects. The weekly theme guides the story, but a different Toy, Clay, Comic or Blob stopmotion technique is emphasized each week. When they’re not working on latest stopmotion software and MacBook laptops, they’re outside in their Recreation or Team Time station for a perfectly balanced day.

Beyond the technology, what really makes animation possible at this age are our college-graduate Instructors and college student Counselors. With unwavering patience, they teach kids to work as a team, compromise with each other, and come up with creative solutions to the challenges of making movie magic.

(Liked) Just hearing my son talk about the new friends he has made, and how they are collaborating in his group and coming up with awesome ideas and funny aspects to their film.” -Greg Szilagyi, 2011 Alameda Parent

When it’s time to hand the classroom keys back to our host schools, we head to the park! Edmo in the Park is hosted in or near local parks and nature preserves from late July – mid August. We customize each weekly theme depending on the geography, history, nature and local ecosystem of the region.

Our lucky entering 2nd—4th grade campers go on weekly adventures to local museums, businesses or organizations that relate to each theme.  While at the park, campers spend most of the day outdoors on nature hikes, completing outdoor art and science projects, or playing outdoor recreation games. Plus guest artists, presenters and performers visit the park each week. Not a bad way to spend your last days of summer break, right?

Of course, many of our Edmo traditions follow us to the park. Kids still play the The Edmo Vibe Game, start and end the day with ridiculous rallies and Mo the Monkey, our camp mascot is always hanging around. Just try keeping him out of a park…it’s impossible.

We wish Edmo in the Park was offered all summer…Our daughter (age 7) loved the field trips, the time outdoors, and the room to roam.” -Christine Witherspoon, 2011 Edmo in the Park Parent

There are also protected areas at each of the different field trip locations that our older campers will be visiting.

At camp, kids build what some call “21st Century Life Skills” and others call “values.”
We call it the “Edmo Vibe.”

Curiosity

When kids get curious, they want to learn more. They ask questions. They think critically. Our unique projects spark a child’s natural sense of wonder. Our playful staff provide a safe space for kids to experiment, build, discover and create. Your child will come home so excited, we bet you’ll learn a thing or two yourself!
92% of parents report their child taught a family member something they learned.

Confidence

When kids build confidence, they challenge themselves. They express themselves creatively. They are happier. Each curriculum builds on what campers learned the previous day. Our enthusiastic staff heaps on tons of positive reinforcement when kids give their best effort, use imagination, take risks and rock their camp spirit.  Watch your kids shine at camp, at home, and in the community.
98% of parents surveyed say their kids were proud of the projects they created.

Kindness

When kids show kindness, special things happen. They form new friendships. They build trust in others. Our caring staff, hands-on projects, and outdoor games foster cooperation, communication skills, and community spirit. We even dedicate a specific time to team building each day. We make the world a better place — one camp day at a time.
95% of parents surveyed would recommend Camp Edmo to friends or colleagues.

Visit our Edmo Vibe Game page to see how we turn curiosity, confidence & kindness into a game!

  • Ratios: We maintain a camper:staff ratio of 8:1 during most camp activities. For younger groups the camper:staff ratio can be 6:1…especially when activities involve tying knots, cutting, gluing or glitter…definitely glitter.
  • Groups: Campers are grouped with kids their own age. Groups are generally 10-20 kids.
  • Buddy Requests: We will do our best to honor requests to group friends together. Sometimes circumstances like large age differences, “frienemy” behavior, or camper:staff ratios preclude us from being able to group kids together. We’ll give you a heads up if for some reason we can’t…especially the “frienemies.”
  • Age Appropriate Activities: Although the weekly theme is the same for all age groups, the actual activities, concepts and degree of difficulty for completion vary according to the age group.
  • Modified Activities: On rare occasions we may need to modify weekly activities due to weather, material availability, time constraints or the kid who spilled the entire jar of cabbage juice for the project.
  • Balance: Every day we make time to hang out with our staff and camp friends during camp rallies, morning and afternoon breaks, lunch time, and some parts of outdoor recreation. We structure our unstructured time.
  • Safety: CPR/First Aid certified staff members are present on-site at all times. Background checks are performed on all staff.
  • Behavior: We’ll work with you if your child is acting out at camp. Unfortunately, if his/her behavior is detracting from the camp experience of kids and staff or compromising the safety of others, we may ask you to pick your child up from camp.
